A ball valve is a shut-off valve that controls the flow of a liquid or gas by means of a rotary ball having a bore. By rotating the ball a quarter turn (90 degrees) around its axis, the medium can flow through or is blocked. They are characterized by a long service life and provide a reliable sealing over the life span, even when the valve is not in use for a long time. As a result, they are more popular as a shut-off valve then for example the gate valve. Moreover, they are more resistant against contaminated media than most other types of valves. In special versions, ball valves are also used as a control valve. This application is less common due to the relatively limited accuracy of controlling the flow rate in comparison with other types of control valves. However, the ball valve also offers some advantages here. For example, the valve still ensures a reliable sealing, even in the case of dirty media.

What is a Ball Valve?

Ball Valve is a valve with a round disc-shaped flow controller like a ball. The ball disc has a hole right in the middle. Ball Valve in an open position (open) when the hole is facing in the direction of both ends of the valve, and flow will occur. And when the handle is rotated so that the position of the hole is perpendicular to the end of the valve, the position of the valve is closed, and the flow will be blocked or closed.

Ball valve is widely used because of its ease of repair and ability to withstand high pressure and temperature. Depending on what material they are made, the Ball Valve can withstand pressures of up to 10,000 Psi and temperatures around 200 degrees Celsius.

Ball Valves are widely used in industrial applications because they are very versatile, can withstand pressures up to 1000 barrels and temperatures up to 482 ° F (250 ° C). Its size usually ranges from 0.2-11.81 inches (0.5 cm to 30 cm).

Ball Valve can be made of metal, plastic or even ceramic materials. The ball is often chrome coated to make it more durable.

1. Full Bore Ball Valve

2. Reduced Bore Ball Valves


Reduced bore ball valves are a type of ball valve whose ball hole diameter is not the size / smaller than the pipe size. The reduced diameter of the valve ball is one size lower than the actual diameter of the pipe. For example the size of a pipe diameter of 4 inches and the diameter of a ball valve is 3 inches.

Ball Valve is often used in hydrocarbon processes, ball valves are able to regulate the small flow of gas and steam, especially for low pressure. This valve can be quickly closed and tight enough to hold fluid / liquid. The ball valve does not use a handwheel, but uses the ankle to open or close the valve at a 90 ° angle. The design is simple, minimizing the pressure drop when the valve is fully opened.
